As you may have seen across our social media pages, we are in the midst of an exciting move! I can’t wait to get settled into our new home and share the process with you, but in the meantime wanted to highlight a DIY project from a few years ago. Since most of us are spending a lot of time inside these days, I can’t think of a better way to spend some downtime than creating something beautiful for your home with your own two hands! If you have a vintage or previously loved piano in your home that needs a makeover, this project is for you!
I always envisioned having a white piano in my home, but they tend to be rare finds that can be on the pricier side. Facebook Marketplace to the rescue! I love using it for local furniture finds that don’t break the bank. I snagged this piano for $50, and now my family uses it every day! If you don’t come across a piano on Facebook Marketplace and don’t have one laying around, your local thrift store may have one at a reasonable price, or you could help a loved one complete this transformation on theirs.
I love to see the shiplap style on walls, backsplash, steps, and pretty much everything, so why wouldn’t it look just as amazing on a piano? I have seen one piano with shiplap on the front below the keys, but not on the sides as I envisioned. I took to Pinterest, but nothing popped up, so I decided to create the first shiplap piano on the internet! Here’s how…
1. Lightly sand the piano using an electric sander or thin sandpaper.
2. Use a concentrated liquid TSP substitute to remove any grease and grime from the piano. This can be found at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Mix 8 ounces with a gallon of water, roughly wash the piece off with this and let it dry before you paint it.
3. Take 15 x 32-inch plywood to fit the sides and front of the piano. You can use a carpenter’s glue. Add nickel in between each piece of plywood for spacing to create the shiplap look.
4. Add three (or more) coats of Annie Sloan white chalk paint, sand the piano again after. You can purchase this paint via https://www.anniesloan.com/.

Look at that transformation! I am beyond happy with how this piece turned out, and now it’s a staple for my home. Maybe this will inspire you to breathe new light into a pre-owned piece with a bit of time, elbow grease, and love!
